Why

The Why, When & How to visit...

It's difficult not to love Greece. The breathtaking scenery, historic architecture, beautiful weather and of course the food and hospitality that makes Greece distinctly Greece. With thousands of islands and a large mainland with variations throughout, there's much to see and experience.

This Greece Guide focuses on the capital city of Athens and popular islands of Santorini and Mykonos, along with my personal favorite Naxos located in between. All 3 have flight and ferry options from Athens.

When
How

The main international airport is in the capital city of Athens (ATH) with direct flights from a few North American cities (NYC, CHI, ATL, DC, TOR, MTL).  From ATH, there are direct flights to over 25  places within Greece.

Highs are 70 degrees F and above May - Oct with next to no rain. July and August can be uncomfortably hot and busy leaving May-June and Sept-Oct nice times to visit that are typically less crowded and less hot.

Reaching the Athens city center from the airport is a 35-60 min drive depending on traffic. Here is a suggested Private Transfer option to pre-arrange with mostly 5 star reviews. Alternatively, the M3 train is connected to the airport that runs every 30 min from 6:30am-11:30pm and takes about 35 min to reach the city center, which is what I took. It costs 9 Euros one-way and 16 Euros round-trip compared to a taxi for 40 Euros during the day and 55 Euros at night one-way at the time of writing.

Reaching many Greek islands is also accessible by ferry or a cruise.  Ferry options across the various ferry companies are aggregated in Ferryhopper. Based in Greece, Ferryhopper covers ferry bookings across Greece and 9 other countries across Europe and has an app to have all bookings tracked in one place. I used this for all my ferry bookings across Greece and Italy and found it very convenient to use. The port in Athens with the ferry and cruise terminal is called Pireaus, about a 20 min drive from the center of Athens. It is a very large port with several departure points, so be sure to know which gate your ship leaves from.

Pre-arranging transportation to the port is worthwhile to avoid needing to catch a cab or rely on public transit.  I planned to take the train to Pireaus on a day that a labor strike occurred and the trains weren't running. Luckily, I was able to share a cab with others, but was stressful and needed to pay surge pricing in cash to secure. This is a situation where having at least 60 Euros in cash on hand and allowing a time cushion is prudent when traveling.  Here is one Private Transfer provider to check out with all, but one 5-star review (at the time of writing) at a competitive price point.

Most cruise lines offer a Greek Islands cruise or include them in a Mediterranean cruise typically departing from the main cruise terminal in Athens, Barcelona, Rome or Venice, as another option to island hop. Virgin Voyages and Celebrity Cruises are two examples.

Where

to stay...

1) Athens - In Athens, check out the Lekka Hotel & Spa and the Marblous Hotel. Both are low to mid-priced, newer boutique hotels with similar design aesthetics. Both are centrally located in Athens within walking distance to the historic sites, stores, restaurants and the subway station to the Athens airport and Pireaus port. Lekka has a spa and rooftop terrace overlooking the Acropolis, as well as room options with bunk beds for families. Both include breakfast in the room rate with Lekka offering a breakfast buffet and Marblous providing a superb multi-course breakfast that can be served in the room. More details and the ability to book at Lekka is available here and Marblous here

A much more expensive, but stunning option is the Dolli at Acropolis newly opened in Q1'23. Grecotel, the largest luxury hotel group in Greece, magnificently transformed over 5 years a deteriorating mansion built in 1925 into a gorgeous luxury hotel.  The hotel features 46 bright, airy rooms with high ceilings, lots of natural light. and elegant finishes.  The hotel has wonderful views of the Acropolis nearby from its rooftop restaurant and from some of the rooms too. It also has a lux lounge for drinks & bites. More information and the ability to book is accessible here

For a hotel closer to Piraeus, check out The Alex Monte Kastella. The Alex is a newer building with modern design choices, nice rooms with terraces, and a great rooftop restaurant with a spacious terrace overlooking the harbor with incredible sunsets and an outstanding fish ceviche. More information and the ability to book is accessible here

2) Santorini - Located in the heart of Oia are the Charisma Suites and Caldera Premium Villas. Charisma has 18 rooms with sea views, some of which have an outdoor jetted tub and an outdoor pool. One is even in a windmill.  Caldera has 26 rooms varying in size, including a budget option without the outdoor space like the rest. The hotel has an outdoor pool and includes daily breakfast.

Further away from the concentrated part of Oia, but still within walking distance is Allure Breeze Suites. This guesthouse has 4 rooms each with its own outdoor jetted tub and gorgeous views overlooking the water and cliffs of the island. Lastly, Santolia Art Suites also has 4 rooms each with its own hot tub and pool with a terrace that's roomy enough for massages on the terrace. All four properties have the traditional white washed walls and airiness expected with Greece with gorgeous views overlooking the water.

3) Mykonos - Legacy Suites and Epic Mykonos are two nice boutique guesthouses in the heart of Mykonos.  Both have 7 or 8 rooms, all of which with sea views many with terraces, and hot tubs at Legacy. The accommodations are only 1.6 miles (2.5 km) from the airport with a shuttle (free at Legacy) and a short walk to the windmills. There is no pool on site, but Ornos Beach is a 30 min walk or short drive away. More details on the hotels, along with the ability to book is accessible for Legacy here and Epic here

4) Naxos - For a small, boutique guesthouse within walking distance of the port and Agios Georgios Beach, check out Polis of Naxos Stylish Suites. The rooms are spacious with a cool vibe with earthy tones. More details on the hotel, along with the ability to book is accessible here. If you're looking to fully unplug in a more remote location, head to Seven Suites. These Seven Suites are located further inland, but still a short drive to the port, town, and beaches. All suites have sea views and outdoor space.  The property has an outdoor pool and includes daily breakfast.  More information and the ability to book is available here
